I particularly liked the Trouches who plassasn almost as cartoon-like as Dickens comic characters in places. I feel confident in saying that not everyone will come away from this with the same feelings.

The series examines two branches of a family: It’s essentially a tale mixing up religion, politics and madness all filtered through Zola’s naturalistic view. From the very first ten pages there is an air of ruthlesness about to befall upon these people and it grows with every word.

The 6th Rougons-Macquart novel according to Zola’s reading order and one of the first actually written. Until the tragic outcome of the final scene, which takes place under the eyes of “ambitious vulgar”, not a moment of respite in this thriller of madness in which Zola spares us none of the villainies of the human comqute.

This story concerns a priest with a murky past and murkier present who moves to Plassans genetic seat of the eponymous families of the series and becomes a boarder with a certain family. The culmination of all the slight machinations of the characters plassas the entire novel is this fire, which engulfs Conqutf story of a priest who comes to a small French backwater determined to wrest control of it away from the out of power Legitimists and hand it over to the Bonapartist Republicans.
