The story traces Mahendravaraman and later his son Narasimhavaraman’s rule centered around the battles with Pulikesi II. He calls truce and says he wants to enter Kanchi as the King’s friend much to the disbelief and dismay of Narasimhavarman, who does not trust the sincerity of Pulikesi.
But Pulakesi devises a devious way of making her dance by beating the captured Pallava citizens kalkiyiin stopping only when Sivagami dances.
Pulakeshin leaves Kanchi and on the final day Mahendravarman reveals how he managed to outwit him as Wajrabahu. Would like to read once again! For this I bow to the great author Kalki.
Author tried her best to keep the spirit of the original by retaining few sabathm words. Narasimhavarman, now crowned King, is married to the Pandya princess, Vanamadevi.

January —June Kalki. I started this book after ponniyin selvan. Jun 03, Prabhu R rated it really liked it. The city was known in ancient days for its forward education and the arts. That night Paranjothi is arrested by the guards and is kept in a cell since Mahendravarman wants to see and jail the young man who saved the life of his most important sqbatham.
Thus, this famous novel ends as historic tragedy. He continues his preparation for attacking Vatapi.
War, palace intrigue, description of nature, culture, religion, all are part of the script. Satrugnan, the spy chief, in the Pallava army, comes with the news from the emperor asking Narasimhavarman to launch an attack on Durveneedhan, a local chieftain who tries to attack Kanchi in this hour of crisis. A must read, nevertheless. Other important characters paranjothi,mahenthra varmar father of narasima varma. It gave me the same feeling of reading the book in Tamil, which is I believe a very important factor in such books.
Honour, love and friendship are important themes that run through the course of the novel.

Special mention for the audio book. Kalki’s this masterpiece should be essential blueprint for writing historical fiction. Write a product review. Naganandhi returns to Vatapi as Pulakeshin through a secret tunnel and withdraws the surrender offer. But Mahendravarman tries to convince and finally makes sure Narasimhavarman is not in town when Pulakeshin enters it, by asking the prince to go to war with the Pandya kings in the south.
I’ve never admired some one dancing Bharatham sjvagamiyin, but I did when Sivagami danced in the Kanchi palace!
From the Buddhist monastery Sivagami notices Narasimhavarman chasing Durveneedhan’s forces and in a sudden twist of events Narasimhavarman rescues Aayannar, Sivagami from an impending flood.
Each volume ends with a cliffhanger, making you rush to the next. Such an enchanting story entwined with real history would be a delight to see on screen! When your rating is in 2 decimal places, you know you have thought a lot about the book. The tamil is mesmeric and the audiobook makes it more magical with background music and explanation for Tirunavukarasar songs was so beautiful.
