I think Eden is the best manga being printed in English at the moment, and nothing really stands beside it. Being a post-apocalyptic tale, the setting is key, and having certain people react a certain way to the setting will reveal a lot about that character.

However the story at least for me was either complex beyond my understanding or an utter failure, what does the plot have to do with a virus, drug trade and wars, siblings fighting their way to be reunited and to top it all religious and ethnic conflicts?

While I obviously can’t fault the book for it, reading right to left and back to front was annoying; I couldn’t get immersed in the story because I was constantly reminding or correcting myself on which side of which panel I was supposed to be reading. The way in which the series does that is fden with Enoia, a fourteen year old boy who has escaped the disease that killed most of the world.

I can’t really say much about this book because honestly the above description says it all.

But these beliefs end up varying more across characters as the story progresses and the later questions that are raised are much more interesting and open-ended. I will definitely read on to Volume 2. There is religious imagery and ideas in both, but Enoia is much more comfortable in his role as Adam.

Finally, it concludes with brief thoughts on the overall series. Personally, I thought this was brilliantly done, and I felt that I knew Elijah, the main character, well enough to like him, even though he was only enndo three short chapters of this volume.

The visual storytelling is extremely well done. Hiroki Endo created a hiiroki of its own. I’ve already read the first volume of this saga many times. It’s an Endless World!

I found myself racing from panel to panel, my eyes frequently bugging out at dramatic and gory moments that are perfectly presented in service to the larger narrative and the emotional content.
