This book transports you back before cars and computers, before women’s rights and civil rights, into a fantasy realm of what the world might have been like before the modern age.

I was in the 5th grade.

It was vibrant and meticulously detailed. I avoided it as my next book choice many times not wanting to tackle something that would take up so much time. Iza is a medicine woman and although the cwvernario is one of the “Others” a Cro-Magnon human and very different to the Clan who are Neanderthals she is unable to walk away fro Ayla is just 5 years old when she loses her entire family and everyone she has ever known oo a cave in caused by an earthquake.

Ayla’s story isn’t without struggle and difficulty, but it also contains strength and love and a ferocity that I absolutely adore.

The majority of the issues that I osl have had with the book were petty and not worth mentioning. Looking forward to book two. View all 11 comments. Completely alone and without the skills she needs to survive she wanders aimlessly until she is injured by a cave lion and she is close to death when members of the Clan of libo Cave Bear find her. Around the Year i Throughout the series, you will see her growing more and more as she goes off cavrnario find “her own people”.

As this young girl has been marked by a Cave Lion and survived, they deem it acceptable even positive to take her along with them. The long descriptions never come across as dry or boring, but instead leave me with more questions.

She was a fine narrator and I became very used to her reading for Ayla and the other characters. It’s equally a story of love and abuse. Quotes from El Clan del Oso C View all 15 comments. I’m giving it 5 stars. What do you imagine happened to Durc after Ayla left?

Iza, the medicine woman of the Clan of the Cave Bear, stumbles upon her and takes her under her wing, but Broud, the proud son of the clan leader, Brun, takes an immediate disliking to the young non-Clan girl.

To them, blond, blue-eyed Ayla looks peculiar and ugly–she is one of the Others, those who have moved into their ancient homeland; but Iza cannot leave the girl to die and takes her with them. Trivia About The Clan of the C Auel 5 26 Jul 09, I edited this review slightly just now, to delete one accidental dittography.

It’s very fortunate for Ayla that these are the kind people she ends up with. To her credit, Auel was the first writer in the genre to attempt it on a large scale though Jack London and William Golding each wrote single novels set in prehistoryand to popularize it sufficiently to create a market niche and a subgenre tradition that other writers have begun to develop.

While this may seems like a recipe for disaster, the author integrates it seamlessly. I really liked this book so much that I even acquired a copy, however, after reading it the first time, I felt deceived.

You still have to get books from the library, bookstore, Amazon, etc. Want to Read saving…. I think that dynamic is what made this book so riveting to me.
