We can do better, much better, than the say-what-you’re-going-to-say, elegant variation, inefficient exposition, boilerplate, incoherent paragraphs, impenetrable tables, unemphatic word order, straggling sentences, contrived triplets, verbosity, nominalization, passive verbs, barbaric neologisms, abstractions, five-dollar words, teutonisms, acronyms, this-es, and fractured idioms of modern economic prose.
Chapter 13 Control Your Tone. This one is short, efficient, and to the point.

Economical Writing, Third Edition
econoical Lessons in Clarity and Grace, which is both richer in the similar advice it gives and more timeless in the ways it diverges from McCloskey. A valuable short guide for mastering the craft of academic writing!
Writing seems to be a big challenge for many of our students. The audience for the book appears to be reasonably experienced mcclosket who deal in complexity, and who need a refresher on how to make their writing more understandable and interesting.
Trivia About Economical Writing. Near the end of the book McCloskey really jumps off the rails, venturing into curmudgeon territory.
Understanding the motions of the planets was not critical for our survival most of the time; understanding the distribution of scarce resources absolutely was. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in writing or finding writing difficult, even if they are not economists. Two strengths of the book are that it’s funny my friends couldn’t believe I was laughing aloud at a style manual and that it gives a host of references to other books on writing.
This entertaining volume will teach you how to write meaningful and joyful economics. Transitioning from undergraduate to graduate writing techniques is very difficult for me. I only found out about this book because it is required reading for one of my postgraduate courses.
McCloskey’s writing is so succinct, friendly and easy to read, and her advice on writing is already helping me improve my uni assignments. Titles of related interest also available from Waveland Press:
