On the face of it, Chicken and Plums is chickeh a story about Nassir Ali Kahn, a revered musician, who is on a search for chiicken new tar because his favorite one has been broken. Each episode is illustrated with Satrapi’s characteristic, almost childlike drawings, which take on the stark expressiveness of block prints.

I think I would also have liked to see a bit more transition from being alive to being dead, maybe more pages like that to show about the experience of dying, since it was a transitional dying process and I was especially interested in the way Satrapi caught this process with image alongside text. But, being a pioneer in the graphic marjae form—hell, a lone populiser of the form—I had to read something by her. That is how Persian tales begin.
